Rock of Cashel area
the Tipperary countryside shortly before sunset

From stunning sea cliffs thousands of feet high, many with a sheer rock face, to out of the way beaches hemmed in by jagged rocks jutting into the sea, Ireland is stunningly beautiful. You don't have to venture far to find great photo ops. They're literally around every corner - the coast, the mountains, the bogland, even the interior valleys. The key is traveling on Ireland's back roads and visiting some of the less traveled regions - Donegal, Mayo. You can take your time driving and stop whenever you want or you can take Bus Eirann which has routes through many of these regions. Check out some of our top scenic spots below. As you can see no one area has the lock on great scenery.

Great Scenic Drives

There are drives throughout Ireland with fantastic scenery. Popular ones like the Ring of Kerry and Slea Head are situated, on the southwest part of the island, along the 2,500-km Wild Atlantic Way. Another very popular drive is the Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland. This is my favorite route to cruise along. Don't be in a hurry. Give yourself plenty of time because you're going to be stopping frequently. This section of Northern Ireland was voted Lonely Planet's #1 region, in the world, to visit in 2018. There are gorgeous mountain passes to drive through in Donegal, green pastures and rolling hills in Tipperary and just about anywhere in Mayo. So, take your time, get onto Ireland's back roads and remember to pull over to view the scenery. Don't try to drive and sightsee at the same time. You'll enjoy the drive much better this way.
